28-31 March 2000: COMMITTEE - Residues of Veterinary Drugs in Foods (12th Session)

• Recommended 54 new and revised MRLs for 7 veterinary drugs in various animal species/tissue combinations for final adoption by the 24th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission;
• Proposed 30 new and revised MRLs for 5 veterinary drugs in various animal species/tissue combinations for preliminary adoption by the 47th Session of the Executive Committee of the Codex Alimentarius Commission;
• Agreed on the priority list of veterinary drugs;
• Noted the recommendations of an informal JECFA/JMPR Harmonization Meeting relevant to the work of the Committee and agreed to revise the definitions of “muscle”, “milk” and “egg” and to elaborate a definition for “fat”;
• Agreed to redraft and further elaborate: (1) guidelines on residues at injection sites; and (2) prevention and control of veterinary drug residues in milk and milk products;
• Agreed to report to the Codex Committee on General Principles those other legitimate factors than science identified as having been used in the framework of risk analysis by the Committee;
• Agreed to consider at the next session: (1) risk analysis principles and methodologies, including matters related to the use of microbiological endpoints in setting an ADI, and data requirements and extrapolation for setting MRLs for minor species; (2) criteria for selecting methods of analysis and methods identified using these criteria; and (3) a discussion paper on antimicrobial resistance and the use of antimicrobials in animal production, which will take into account activities of other international organizations and consider necessity to develop a code of practice for the containment of antimicrobial resistance; and
• Received reports on the evaluations of veterinary drugs by the 52nd and 54th JECFA.
