European Commission (EC) Draft Regulation Setting Maximum Levels For Certain Contaminants in Foodstuffs
Draft Commission Regulation (SANCO/890/2000, which succeeds ENTR/5799/99 - rev 4) setting limits for lead, cadmium and other contaminants in food has been received from the European Commission.
This version consolidates into a single document the proposals in the previous version, together with earlier limits agreed for nitrate and aflatoxins. It has been renamed to reflect the move of this work to the Commission's Health and Consumer Protection Directorate General. The Commission has also produced a draft Directive on Methods of Analysis and Sampling (SANCO/1045/2000) and a draft Decision (SANCO/1046/2000) to repeal existing Decision 93/351/EEC once the limits for mercury currently set by the existing Decision have been transferred to the draft Regulation.
There will be a Commission meeting to discuss these proposals on 15 and 16 May. The letter requests comments by 10 May.
